Relay Mode¶
Relay Mode is the core feature for arena scouts. When you're at the game, you report goals, penalties, empty nets, and faceoffs using simple gestures — before official sources update. Every event you report reaches the community in real time, giving everyone a competitive edge.
What Is Relay Mode?¶
The Relay tab is a dedicated screen designed for fast, one-handed event reporting. Instead of typing or tapping buttons, you swipe in the direction that matches what just happened on the ice. Your report is posted instantly as a scout call, and seconds later the official API confirms it with player names, stats, and details.
Why it matters
Sportsbooks and official feeds often lag 10-30 seconds behind live action. A scout in the arena closes that gap for the entire community.
Gesture Controls¶
The center of the Relay screen is the main swipe zone. Swipe in the direction that matches the event:
| Gesture | Direction | What It Reports |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical swipe | Up | Home team goal |
| Vertical swipe | Down | Away team goal |
| Angled swipe | Right | Home team power play (penalty against away) |
| Angled swipe | Left | Away team power play (penalty against home) |
How angles work
You don't need to swipe at a perfect 45-degree angle. The app classifies your swipe based on whether it's more vertical (goal) or more angled (power play). Just swipe naturally — the app figures out which event you mean.
Face-Off Zone¶
Below the main swipe zone is the Face-Off Zone. This area shows each team's logo and alias on either side with "Face-Off" in the center.
| Gesture | Direction | What It Reports |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal swipe | Right | Home team wins faceoff |
| Horizontal swipe | Left | Away team wins faceoff |
After you report a faceoff winner, the center label changes to "Winner" with the winning team indicated.
Protected Buttons¶
Below the gesture zones, you'll find dedicated buttons for specific game situations:
| Button | Position | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| Empty Net (Away) | Left side | Toggles empty net status for the away team |
| Empty Net (Home) | Right side | Toggles empty net status for the home team |
| 2-Minute Warning | Full width | Signals that action is imminent before a period starts |
| Remind Owner | Full width | Sends a notification to the team owner if relay is off |
Remind Owner
If you open the app and relay mode isn't active, the Remind Owner button sends a push notification to the team owner asking them to enable it. This is rate-limited to once every 5 minutes to prevent spam.
How a Relay Report Works¶
- You swipe — for example, swipe up when the home team scores
- The event posts immediately as a scout call in the live feed
- Seconds later, the official NHL API confirms the event
- The feed updates with the scorer's name, assists, expected goals (xG), and other details
Your initial report gives the community an early signal. The official confirmation enriches it with full context.
Screen Orientation¶
The Relay tab is locked to portrait by default for easy one-handed use. If you prefer landscape mode, tap the landscape toggle in the control bar at the bottom of the screen.
Access Requirements¶
Relay gestures require Scout role or above. If you have a lower role, you can still view the relay screen and see events as they come in, but you won't be able to report events yourself.
| Role | Can View Relay | Can Report Events |
|---|---|---|
| Scout and above | Yes | Yes |
| Full Member and below | Yes | No |
Getting Scout access
Contact your team's server owner or admin to request the Scout role. Scouts are typically people who attend games in person and can report events as they happen.
